This week so far has been a good one, mainly because progress is on the rise. The steel beams all arrived and were welded into place, and the 2nd stage of TJI’s arrived to start the second floor. It’s really starting to look like something now.

Yup, that’s Jonesy standing on the top of what is to be the second and final floor, waving his arms in happiness. He say’s he doesn’t want to be in the pictures, and yet he poses for everyone. Image may be NSFW.

These are part of the beams we have had to install for structural strength.Early on we had decided to just go ahead and make them a focal point by leaving them exposed in the wall, thus my idea to paint them all white including the one outside the door. We could have opted for wood beams and buried them in the wall, but I am all about doing the opposite of what conventional thinking is.

You can tell from these two pictures that this beam system runs the whole length of the house, it is to pick up the load of the second floor as well as the roof. At the front of the house there are 3 steel beams plus a heavy duty wood one to go in the window wall. It is a more expensive way for sure of doing things, but when you have a view like we do maximizing window space and volume is a must, considering that there are not many windows elsewhere, and this is the only way of doing just that.
So this is the progress this week, maybe I’ll be lucky enough to show you by next week walls on the second floor.
